I’m sitting on the floor, getting my email. It’s the day before Christmas Eve. My dad has written to me: “Don’t forget to leave out the cookies for Santa! I’ll really miss you guys this Christmas.”
“God damn it!” I shriek. “Why are we not in Florida? That’s it! We’re going!”
Tom looks at me.
“I’m serious! This is crazy. Let’s go!”
(Florida is 15 hours away.)
I sprint into the kitchen, grab garbage bags and run upstairs, throwing clothes into them–from bureau drawers, from the dryer (the laundry was still a little damp, which ended up being a bad idea), and even from the hampers (I’ll wash it when we get there).
Twenty minutes later, three boys are strapped into their car seats, and under the garbage bags of clothes (no time to find suitcases) are the garbage bags of their Christmas presents. The most laid-back guy on earth is in the passenger seat, and I’m driving.
“Can you type ‘Florida’ into the GPS?” I ask him. “I don’t have their address.”
And so it began.

Wow. You are one spontaneous chick! (And I can smell the moist laundry cooking in the car through the screen. Heh.)
What a cutie in the mirror.
